Karwar : Beach Cleaning Drive Conducted at Ravindranath Tagore Beach, Karwar under Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 2026

As part of the nationwide "Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar 2026" coastal cleanliness campaign coordinated by the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), Chennai, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, a beach-cleaning activity was successfully conducted today at Rabindranath Tagore Beach, Karwar. The 2026 campaign is being conducted across India's coastal regions from September 12 to 19, culminating in International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The beach-cleaning programme at Karwar was coordinated by Professor J. L. Rathod, Department of Studies in Marine Biology, Karnataka University P.G. Centre, Karwar. Faculty, staff and members of the Karnataka University P.G. Centre actively participated in the programme along with personnel from the Indian Coast Guard, Karwar Division, staff of the Science Centre, Karwar, students and staff of Government Arts and Science College, Karwar, staff of the Post Office, Karwar, and members of the Karwar Bicycle Club. The active participation of these institutions and community groups reflected a collective commitment towards maintaining clean and healthy coastal environments.

During the cleanup, a total of 438.99 kg of beach litter and other beach waste was collected from an area covering approximately 1 km x 0.60 km. The scientific categorisation of the collected litter recorded more than 3,495 individual items, representing 45 recorded item categories.

Plastic waste constituted a major component of the collected litter. Important categories included polypropylene woven bags (72.76 kg), polythene/carry bags (50.75 kg), plastic water bottles (33.82 kg), food wrappers (30.74 kg), plastic pieces (19.47 kg), fishing nets (16.40 kg), plastic cups (11.48 kg) and plastic ropes (10.25 kg). Other significant materials included liquor glass bottles (21.72 kg), footwear/flip-flops (33.82 kg), wood (17.22 kg), foam and thermocol (11.20 kg combined), and other categories of paper, metal, rubber and miscellaneous waste. The collected waste was segregated and handed over municipality for proper disposal.

The activity not only contributed to the immediate removal of litter from the beach but also generated systematic information on the type, quantity and composition of coastal litter, which is important for understanding sources of marine debris and supporting long-term coastal pollution management.

Professor J. L. Rathod appreciated the participation of all the departments, government agencies, students and community organisations involved in the programme and emphasised that regular beach-cleaning activities, scientific monitoring, public awareness and responsible waste management are essential for protecting coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity.

The successful conduct of the Karwar beach-cleaning activity demonstrates the importance of collaborative participation among academic institutions, government agencies, students and local communities in achieving cleaner and healthier coastal environments.

ಕಾರವಾರ : (Sept_19_2026) : ಭಾರತ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಭೂ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಚಿವಾಲಯದ ಅಧೀನದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಚೆನ್ನೈನ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರ (NCCR) ಸಂಯೋಜಿಸಿರುವ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರವ್ಯಾಪಿ “ಸ್ವಚ್ಛ ಸಾಗರ, ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತ ಸಾಗರ 2026" ಕರಾವಳಿ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತಾ ಅಭಿಯಾನದ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ಇಂದು ಕಾರವಾರದ ರವೀಂದ್ರನಾಥ ಟ್ಯಾಗೋರ್ ಬೀಚ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೀಚ್ ಸ್ವಚ್ಚತಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಯಿತು. 2026ರ ಈ ಅಭಿಯಾನವು ಭಾರತದ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ 12ರಿಂದ 19ರವರೆಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತಾ ದಿನದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಮಾಪನಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕಾರವಾರದ ಬೀಚ್ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಪಿ.ಜಿ. ಕೇಂದ್ರ, ಕಾರವಾರದ ಮೆರೈನ್ ಬಯಾಲಜಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಜೆ. ಎಲ್. ರಾಥೋಡ್ ಅವರ ಸಂಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಪಿ.ಜಿ. ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಬೋಧಕ ವರ್ಗ, ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಸದಸ್ಯರು, ಭಾರತೀಯ ಕರಾವಳಿ ರಕ್ಷಣಾ ಪಡೆ ಕಾರವಾರ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ, ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಕಾರವಾರದ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ, ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಆರ್ಟ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸೈನ್ಸ್ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಕಾರವಾರದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ, ಅಂಚೆ ಕಚೇರಿ ಕಾರವಾರದ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರವಾರ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ನ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದರು.

ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತಾ ಕಾರ್ಯದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 1ಕಿ.ಮೀ • 0.60ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣದ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಿಂದ ಒಟ್ಟು 438.99 ಕೆ.ಜಿ. ಬೀಚ್ ಕಸ ಹಾಗೂ ಇತರೆ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಲಾದ ಕಸದ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ವರ್ಗೀಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ 45 ವಿವಿಧ ವರ್ಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ 3,495ಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಲಾದ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯವು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲಿಪ್ರೊಪಿಲೀನ್ ನೇಯ್ದ ಚೀಲಗಳು 72.76 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಪಾಲಿಥಿನ್/ಕ್ಯಾರಿ ಬ್ಯಾಗ್‌ಗಳು 50.75 ಕೆ.ಜಿ. ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ನೀರಿನ ಬಾಟಲಿಗಳು 33.82 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಆಹಾರ ಪ್ಯಾಕೆಟ್‌ಗಳ ಹೊದಿಕೆಗಳು 30.74 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ತುಂಡುಗಳು 19.47 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಮೀನುಗಾರಿಕಾ ಬಲೆಗಳು 16.40 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ಕಪ್‌ಗಳು 11.48 ಕೆ.ಜಿ. ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ಹಗ್ಗಗಳು 10.25 ಕೆ.ಜಿ. ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಇತರೆ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮದ್ಯದ ಗಾಜಿನ ಬಾಟಲಿಗಳು 21.72 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಪಾದರಕ್ಷೆಗಳು/ಪ್ಲಿಪ್-ಫ್ಲಾಪ್‌ಗಳು 33.82 ಕೆ.ಜಿ., ಮರದ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ 17.22 ಕೆ.ಜಿ. ಹಾಗೂ ಫೋಮ್ ಮತ್ತು ಥರ್ಮೋಕೋಲ್ 11.20 ಕೆ.ಜಿ. ಸೇರಿವೆ.

ಈ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯು ಬೀಚ್‌ನಿಂದ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕರಾವಳಿ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯದ ವಿಧ, ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಯೋಜನೆಯ ಕುರಿತು ಕ್ರಮಬದ್ಧ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಲು ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಇದು ಸಮುದ್ರ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯದ ಮೂಲಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಹಾಗೂ ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲೀನ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಮಾಲಿನ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಗೆ ಮಹತ್ವದ್ದಾಗಿದೆ.

ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಜೆ. ಎಲ್. ರಾಥೋಡ್ ಅವರು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಇಲಾಖೆಗಳು, ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು, ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಮುದಾಯ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಸಹಭಾಗಿತ್ವವನ್ನು ಶ್ಲಾಘಿಸಿದರು. ಕರಾವಳಿ ಪರಿಸರ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮುದ್ರ ಜೀವವೈವಿಧ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ನಿಯಮಿತ ಬೀಚ್ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳು, ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಣೆ, ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ ಅಗತ್ಯವೆಂದು ಅವರು ಒತ್ತಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ಕಾರವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಈ ಬೀಚ್ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತಾ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛ ಮತ್ತು ಆರೋಗ್ಯಕರ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಪರಿಸರವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು, ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು, ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಸಮುದಾಯಗಳ ಸಹಭಾಗಿತ್ವದ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿದೆ.
